UA Game Day Tips with UA Coach's Wife Ashley Bush

By Stephanie Horton, MK Tuscaloosa Publisher August 26, 2022

It was such a pleasure to meet Ashley and talk about life as a coach's wife, football season, and game day tips.   Ashley is married to Daniel Bush the director of recruiting for the University of Alabama Football team.  They met at the Baptist Campus Student Ministries while attending the University of Alabama. They began dating at the end of senior year.  After grad school Daniel was hired to work at the University of Arkansas for three seasons.  Ashley is so much more than just the wife of a coach.  She has spent time as a professional ballerina with the Birmingham Ballet. While they were in Arkansas, Ashley stepped back from dancing professionally and became a dance instructor.  Then they moved to Colorado, and as the pictures had been hung and the house decorated; Coach Saban called and invited Daniel to work with the University of Alabama.  The Bush's excitedly moved back to Tuscaloosa in 2019.

What does football season look like for you guys?  Football season is full time and long hours.  "I take the kids to see dad,  So they can see him for a bit in the parking lot since he gets home so late.  We also do a lot of face time. We go to church together Sunday morning. Coach goes to church every Sunday."  Family time is a priority.

What are some fun things you enjoy in Tuscaloosa?  "During football season, we do a lot of parks in the morning.  We also do CHOM.  Saturdays are a working day, and we just hang out. Then enjoy the games."  Bi-week is our family week during football season.  "We love going to Altitude in Birmingham.  We go to the Tuscaloosa Barnyard and the zoo. We try to take an adventure as a family that week."

Where can you find Big AL on Game Day?

He is usually near the fence.  He is good about coming over for a photo.  You can also see him pregame at the Elephant Stomp and the Walk of Fame.

What do you pack in your Game Day bag?

  • Hats
  • Cool Towels
  • Snacks for little kids (if you are taking a diaper bag)
  • Ear plugs for those with sound sensitivities
  • Wipes
  • Sunglasses
  • Fan

What are your game day tips for families?  "My son loves the band.  We go to listen to them practice during the week."

"On game day, we try to get their an hour before kickoff to see dad and hear the band when they start."

If you are going to the quad with littles, you can enjoy the Kid Zone which has inflatibles.  There is the Pepsi zone which usually has players (past and present) signing autographs.  The Elephant Stomp happens before kickoff at the Gorgas Library.

Buy a drink, and you can utilize the water stations around the stadium.  Sensory bags are also available.

Aside from all the tips just "Enjoy the moment with your kids."   Make each moment count, and you will have memories to treasure.

Thank you, Ashley, for taking time to share some of your UA Game Day tips.
