June Art At HOME

A Monthly Feature of the Art Garage

By Joanna Lemmon, Owner of the Ladylines Art Garage June 10, 2022

Summer does not hesitate to arrive in Tuscaloosa, does it? But even though the days ahead are steamy and hot, we are so thankful for the slower, calmer days of summer.  Children need a break from the routine of school and parents do too!  At the Art Garage we love providing simple structured activities and unstructured space for children to create all summer long.  Being inside with art is an opportunity to take a break from the sun and sweat.  We’d love you to come visit us and relax in the cool studio while your children become creators. If visiting the studio is not something you can do right now, we have some ideas of summer art fun, at home!  Here is our Art at Home feature for Macaroni Kids.  Let it be something that helps occupy your children’s summer playtime without needing a screen.

A great summer art activity is a POOL NOODLE BOAT

SUPPLIES NEEDED

Plastic Straw(one from a drive-thru will work just fine)

One piece of white cardstock or construction paper. (If you have a watercolor paper, that would even be better.)

Watercolors

One inch of a pool noodle.  (Parents need a pair of scissors to easily slice off a 1-one inch circle from the end of a pool noodle)

HOW IT WORKS

  1. With parent help cut off the circle from the pool noodle and get help folding white paper in ½ and cut the paper into a triangle (like the roof of a house). Cut a small slit in the top and the bottom of the triangle (big enough for the straw to fit through).
  2. With watercolors, decorate the triangle to look like a sailboat sail.
  3. Once the triangle is dry (a hairdryer speeds up the process), insert the straw into the top and bottom slit of the sail.
  4. Insert the bottom of the straw into the pool noodle foam.
  5. In the bathroom tub, sink, or outside play pool, let your sailboat go for a sail!

Enjoy sailing your boat and imagining where adventure it might be taking
