February Art at Home

A Monthly Feature by the Art Garage

By Joanna Lemmon, Owner of the Ladylines Art Garage February 21, 2022

A great art activity at home that is simple, not too messy, and uses common household items is coffee filter art.  At the Art Garage we use coffee filters for art all of the time.

Things you will need:

markers

clean medicine dropper

water

coffee filter

hairdryer

clothespin or a pipe cleaner

How it works:

If you care about the surface that your child is working on, you might want to lay down a dish towel or a washable placemat first.

1. Color a pattern of colors with the markers onto the coffee filter.

2. Using the medicine dropper, dip the dropper into the water and get a few drops of water. ( this is a great fine motor skill)

3.  Drop the water droplets onto the colored pattern all over the coffee filter.

4. Once the coffee filter is pretty wet, grab a hairdryer to speed this art activity up, and dry the coffee filter.  You can also let this air dry and come back for the last step.

5.  Something fun to do is to also let your children decorate the clothespin before the last step.  If you are using a pipe cleaner, you can skip that part.  Fold the pipe cleaner in half and place the dry coffee filter in the middle.  Carefully twist the pipe cleaner while making the coffee filter gather in the middle.  The clothespin can do the same thing.  Gather the pipe cleaner in the middle and then pinch with the clothespin.

6.  And ta-da!  You have a beautiful, colorful butterfly that you can tuck into an indoor spring wreath or a spring mantle display.

You can make several of these and hang them in your kitchen windows!  They are simple,  loads of fun to make, and very inexpensive.  When you make these at home be sure to post them online and tag  @mackidtuscaloosa and @ladyelinesartgarage We can't wait to see your houses looking cheery and ready for spring!
