Going to a game at Bryant Denny Stadium in Tuscaloosa, Alabama is such a fun experience for families. There is excitement at every corner. The Million Dollar Band is ready to play the team to victory while the cheerleaders are getting the crowd pumped up. The smells of popcorn, hotdogs, and pizza are staples to game day. Seeing all the people, lights, and of course Big Al are just more reasons to love a University of Alabama football game. Yet the day can be a bit overwhelming, with all the noise, lights, and new sights for young children or children with Sensory Processing Disorders.
This past Saturday, we went to our first home game here at Bryant Denny. It was not just my children's first time at a game, but mine as well. An added bonus was having my parents (affectionately called Nana and Papa) with us. My Dad is from Alabama, and has been rolling with the tide for a long time. We started off watching my cousin warm up with the other Million Dollar Band saxophonists, then went over to find our seats. The kids were so excited (and I was too).
So now after officially attending a Bama Football game, it just seems like a good time to share some tips for going to Game Day with children. These tips are for kids specifically ages 5 and up. With some simple planning and a willingness to be flexible, you will have a wonderful time at Bryant Denny with your children.
TIP #1: Wear comfortable shoes.
There is alot of walking on game day. Even with a closer parking spot, you will potentially walking a few blocks to the Quad or stadium. So this is a must.
TIP #2: The stadium has a clear bag policy.
You can carry one clear bag per person. According to the official stadium site, bags sized 12X6X12 are allowed. You may also carry in binoculars, cameras (not cases), and bleacher seats.
TIP #3: Bring an empty water bottle to refill during the game.
There are concessions available for sale through out the stadium, and there are also water fountains that you may fill up your water bottle. This was such a great tip a friend shared with us. Hydration is so important, and if your children are like mine- they are always thirsty. This also gave us a good reason to get up and stretch a couple times.
TIP #4: If you have a child who is sound sensitive, bring earmuffs.
This was a literal game changer for our middle man. He was able to enjoy the game so much more while wearing the earmuffs to buffer out the loud sounds.
TIP #5: Binoculars are also a fun addition for children.
To help our guys enjoy the game, we brought binoculars for them to see the team better. This was also helpful in picking out our favorite saxophone player during the halftime show.
TIP #6: Arrive early to hear the Elephant Stomp at the Gorgas Library.
One hour before game time, the Million Dollar band warms up and performs on the steps of the Gorgas Library. Usually joined by Big AL. This is also an opportunity to take a picture with cheerleaders, MDB players, and possible Big AL. If you want to walk over the Bryant Denny two hours and fifteen minutes before kickoff, you can see Coach Saban and the team enter the stadium.
Bonus: Clear bag must haves.
